Off on almost the right foot

I’m a fan of fuliginous beginnings- mostly because I don’t really know of any other way to start than messy.
So, here’s the scoop: I have about thirty weeks until I hit the big 3 oh and I have three main goals.
The one that concerns us is learning how to make a variety of tasty, company presentable cakes while not increasing in waist size.

Why cakes?
A cake is a symbol.  For me it’s birthday hugs, celebratory kisses and laughter with those I love.  A cake is a promise of good things and good times, wrapped up neatly in creamy frosting.  And while a lot of the time life consists of the challenges of work and school and household chores, family and friends miles away and busy themselves, I want a little quotidian magic.  So, I will bake a cake, or 30.

I'm not interested in making something with moving parts or life-sized figurines.  The art of professional cake making has become just that, art.  While it's cool and there's good money (and tv celebrity in it), it's not what I'm about.  I want the type of cake that you can actually eat- all of.  I don't have a flame thrower and possess minimal to nil mechanical skills... I'm just after some good cake.
